Cocora with a tour or on your own: which option should you choose?

Practical tips · 7 min read

If you are staying in Salento, travelling alone or as a couple and want a long walk, Cocora Valley is easy to do on your own with the shared Willys that leave from the village square. If you are staying in Filandia or Quimbaya, travelling as a group of four or more or as a family, or want to combine Cocora and Salento without any logistics, a Willys tour with hotel pick-up is simpler.

The wax palms of Cocora are easy to visit on your own, and just as easy by Willys with a willysero. The right option mostly depends on three things: the village where you sleep, how many people you are travelling with, and how much you feel like walking.

Start with one question: where are you sleeping?

Before comparing prices, look at the map. All the logistics for Cocora start in Salento: it is on the village square that the shared Willys pick up travellers for the valley.

If your hotel is in Salento, getting to Cocora on your own is simple. You have breakfast, you cross the square, you climb into a Willys with other travellers. Nothing to book, nothing to plan the night before.

If you are staying in Filandia or Quimbaya, it is another story. First you need to get to Salento by bus, sometimes with a connection, and only then head up to the valley. In the evening, you have to make the same trip in reverse, tired, keeping an eye on the time of the last bus. Nothing impossible, but the day starts and ends in transport.

To decide where to stay, read Salento or Filandia: where to sleep?. All the ways to reach the valley are explained in Cocora Valley: how to get there from Quimbaya, Filandia or Salento.

Cocora on your own: how it works

The pattern is always the same. The Willys wait in Salento and leave throughout the day, depending on demand. You get off at the entrance to the valley, you walk at your own pace, then you take a Willys back.

Entry is paid on site. Keep pesos in cash in your pocket.

What works in your favour:

  • You choose your time, and you can leave very early to have the palms almost to yourself.
  • You do the big loop if you feel like it, or just the palm section.
  • It is the cheapest option when you travel alone or as a couple.

What works against you:

  • On busy days, you sometimes have to wait for your Willys, both on the way there and on the way back.
  • You handle everything: timetables, cash, weather, the trail.
  • Nobody tells you about what you are seeing. The palms are still magnificent, but they don't talk.

If you are going on your own, our tips for hiking in Cocora Valley will help you prepare for the walk.

What a tour actually changes

With a tour, the day starts differently. Your willysero picks you up at your hotel, in Quimbaya, Filandia or Salento, at no extra cost. We drink a tinto together on the square, then we climb into the Willys.

Our Cocora + Salento tour leaves at 8 am and returns between 4 and 5 pm. Entry to the valley is included: you don't have to count your notes at the gate. After the wax palms, we head back down to Salento for the colourful balconies and steep streets. The traditional lunch is optional, five photos of the day are yours as a gift, and the price is 200,000 COP per person, with a minimum of four people billed.

What you mostly gain is peace of mind. You don't watch the clock for the last bus to Filandia, you don't look for the Willys queue. And you travel with someone who knows the trail, the fincas and the stories of the valley: after 15 years on these roads, our team of willyseros has plenty to tell.

On flexibility, three commitments:

  • Free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
  • Free rescheduling if the road or the site is closed.
  • Full refund if we are the ones who cancel.

That second point matters right now. For the state of the roads and sites, see what is open in the coffee region after the earthquake.

The honest maths: alone, as a couple or as a group

Alone or as a couple, going on your own remains the cheapest option. As a couple, even with the capped small-group price, the tour comes to 700,000 COP, which is 350,000 COP each. If you are staying in Salento and travelling as a couple, go on your own, no hesitation.

With four people, the maths changes. Add up the shared Willys, the valley entry, the buses from Filandia or Quimbaya if you are staying there, and the time spent waiting: the gap narrows, and the day includes Salento as a bonus, without a single ticket to buy.

As a family, two details tip the balance. Children aged 0 to 3 travel for free, and from 4 to 11 they pay the adult price minus 30%. Above all, you don't have to carry a sleeping child onto a late afternoon bus.

With six, seven or eight people, also look at the Private Willys for the day: 650,000 COP for the jeep for up to 8 people, for 8 hours, on the route you put together with your willysero. A Willys carries exactly 8 passengers, the size of a big family or a group of friends. You can then spend more time walking, or add a coffee finca along the way.

Hikers or dreamers: two ways to see the palms

Cocora is not just one kind of visit. Some people come to walk for a long time: the big loop, the cloud forest, the river, the slow climb before finding the palms again from above. Others come mainly to see the wax palms in the mist, take photos, and save some energy for Salento.

If the big loop is your goal, go on your own, early in the morning. You will have all the time you need, with nobody waiting for you in the car park.

If you are more of a dreamer, travelling as a family, or if your knees complain on the way down, a guided day will suit you better: the palms, then Salento, without racing against the clock.

And if you dream of palms without the crowds, Cocora is not your only option. Another wax palm forest, more remote, awaits you further into the mountains: the comparison is in Carbonera or Cocora: which one to choose?.

Our tips, whichever option you choose

  • Leave early. In the morning, the valley is quieter and the light is softer on the palms.
  • Be ready for rain. In the mountains, the weather changes fast: a light raincoat and a warm layer in your bag. To know what to expect depending on the season, read When to visit the coffee region.
  • Wear shoes for mud. The trail can be slippery, especially after a shower. Shoes with good grip are better than brand new trainers.
  • Carry cash. Pesos in small notes for the entry, a tinto, a drink.
  • Respect the palms. No climbing on them, no carving on the trunks. The wax palm is Colombia's national tree, and it grows very slowly.
  • Save time for Salento. The balconies, the main street, the lookout: our article What to do in Salento in one day gives you the thread of the walk.

So, tour or on your own?

Go on your own if you are staying in Salento, if you are travelling alone or as a couple, if you want to do the big loop and if you enjoy planning your days.

Choose a tour if you are staying in Filandia or Quimbaya, if there are at least four of you, if you are travelling with children, or if you want Cocora and Salento in the same day without watching the clock.

Either way, the valley is waiting for you with its palms in the mist. The rest is a question of pace. And if you are still unsure, write to us: we will tell you honestly what suits you, even if the answer is to go on your own.
