La Carbonera or Cocora: which one to choose?
Two names come up as soon as people talk about wax palms in Quindío: Cocora and La Carbonera. Both are home to Colombia's national tree. Both are reached by Willys. But they are not the same day at all. Here is how we help you choose, over a tinto, before you climb into the jeep.
The wax palm, star of both valleys
The Quindío wax palm is Colombia's national tree. It grows at altitude, on the slopes of the Central Cordillera, and is among the tallest palms in the world. When you stand at its foot, head tilted back to catch sight of its crown, you understand why people here talk about it with so much pride.
This palm grows slowly, and it needs the forest around it to renew itself. In some meadows it stands alone, planted in the middle of the pasture like a lighthouse. In other corners of the mountains it still forms real forests. That is exactly what sets Cocora apart from La Carbonera.
Cocora: Quindío's postcard
The Cocora Valley is the picture everyone has in mind: hills of an almost unreal green, mist rising from the valley floor, and those palm silhouettes cut out against the sky. It lies very close to Salento, and it is from Salento's square that the Willys heading up there traditionally leave.
Cocora has two great strengths. The first is access: it is easy to reach, and you can adapt the visit to your pace, from a simple stroll among the palms to a real hike. The second is what surrounds it: Salento, with its colourful houses, wooden balconies and cafés, makes a perfect end to the day.
The downside, as you can guess: Cocora is famous and draws crowds, especially at weekends and during Colombian holidays. If you dream of photos with nobody in the frame, you need to leave early or accept sharing the valley.

La Carbonera: the forest the maps forget
La Carbonera is the other face of the wax palm. Here there is no meadow with a few scattered trees: it is a whole, dense forest, where the palms crowd along the ridges and disappear into the clouds. It is described as the largest wax palm forest, and once you are there, you have no trouble believing it.
Getting there takes some will. The road quickly turns into a mountain track: 4x4 required, about 1 h 30 from Salento, a steep climb with potholes, and mud after rain. It is exactly the terrain where the Willys feels at home: these jeeps were built for it, and our willyseros know every hole on the track.
The trade-off is time: La Carbonera takes a full day. Our La Carbonera tour leaves early in the morning and returns in the late afternoon, with a stop in Salento on the way. In exchange, you get peace and quiet: the track keeps the crowds away, and the forest reveals itself far from the bustle of Cocora.
Cocora or La Carbonera: our tips for choosing
We get asked almost every day. There is no wrong choice, only different wishes. Here are the tips we usually give:
- You are short on time or travelling with children: Cocora. Access is easier, the day more flexible, and Salento offers a real break.
- You want Quindío's iconic photo: Cocora, no question. This is where the landscapes you have seen everywhere are.
- You want to avoid crowds: La Carbonera. The track filters people out, and the forest reveals itself almost in silence.
- You love a jeep adventure: La Carbonera. The track is part of the journey, and it is where the Willys shows what it can do.
- You want to see everything in one day: look instead at Salento, Filandia and Cocora by Willys, which links the valley, Salento and Filandia until sunset.
What about the weather?
In the cordillera, the weather changes fast. A clear morning can cloud over in a few minutes, and the mist that makes the photos beautiful can also hide the ridges. That is the mountains, and it is part of their charm. The best time to enjoy the palms is the morning: leave between 7 and 8 am, before the afternoon fog. Whichever you choose, bring a light jacket, good shoes and sun protection: at altitude the sun is strong even when it is cool. And if the road or the weather forces us to change plans, we reschedule your tour for free.

In Quindío, Willys are not collector's cars. For generations they have carried coffee, families and market goods up the tracks. Riding in one is entering the life of the region through the right door: standing at the back, wind in your hair, waving at the people on the fincas watching you go by.
