You have just landed in Armenia, suitcase in hand, and Salento is waiting for you somewhere up in the mountains. Good news: the journey is short and there are several ways to do it. Here are the options, with travel times, prices and our tips as local willyseros.

El Edén airport at a glance

The airport serving Armenia is called El Edén (code AXM). It is a small, friendly airport: you get off the plane quickly, your bags come out without a long wait, and you are soon outside, looking at the green hills of the Quindío.

It is not in the city of Armenia itself but in the municipality of La Tebaida, about 15 km from central Armenia, which means about 20 to 30 minutes by road. That detail matters: depending on the option you choose, you will or will not go through Armenia before heading up to Salento.

Salento sits north-east of Armenia, at the entrance to the Cocora Valley. From the airport it is about 35 to 40 km, or about 45 minutes to 1 hour by car. The road climbs gently between coffee farms and bamboo groves, and the bends come thick and fast in the last few kilometres.

What about the earthquake? The earthquake of 10 August 2026 did not stop El Edén: the airport kept operating normally. As always, check your flight with your airline before you set off.

Option 1: a taxi from the airport

This is the simplest solution when you arrive with luggage and nothing booked. Taxis wait outside the terminal. You can ask to be driven straight to Salento, or only as far as the Armenia bus terminal if you want to finish the trip by bus.

Prices to keep in mind (2026 prices checked in October 2026):

  • Airport to Salento: from about 85,000 COP. There is no official price list at the airport, so agree on the fare before you get in.
  • Airport to the Armenia bus terminal: about 25,000 COP, for a ride of about 25 minutes.

A few practical tips:

  • Agree on the price before loading your bags, and repeat the exact address.
  • Carry Colombian pesos in cash: many drivers do not take cards.
  • If several of you are travelling with big bags, check the boot is large enough before you leave.

The taxi has one big advantage: it drops you at the door of your accommodation. That is welcome after a long flight, especially if you land late in the day.

Option 2: the bus, via the Armenia terminal

The bus is the cheapest option, but it takes two steps, because there is no direct bus from the airport to Salento. First you need to reach the Armenia bus terminal, usually by taxi, then catch a bus to Salento.

On this route the buses are run by Cootracir (2026 prices checked in October 2026):

  • Frequency: about one bus every 15 minutes, from 5:30 am to 8:00 pm from Armenia.
  • Return: from Salento to Armenia, from 5:45 am to 9:00 pm.
  • Journey time: about 1 h 10.
  • Fare: about 8,000 COP per person.

Timetables and fares can change: check them before you arrive on Cootracir’s official website.

The bus ride is pleasant: you see the mountain road and share the journey with locals heading up to do their shopping or coming home from work. On the other hand, with big suitcases, the change and the luggage holds can be tiring.

Our advice: if you land late, do not count on the last bus. Between collecting your bags and the taxi to the terminal, time goes quickly. Keep a taxi or a transfer as your backup plan.

Option 3: a private transfer by Willys

This is the option we offer ourselves. Your willysero waits for you outside the airport with a Tinto Tours sign, loads you and your luggage, and drives you to your accommodation in Salento. A welcome tinto is included: a gentle way to arrive in the Quindío.

The price is on request, depending on the route and the number of people. Just message us on WhatsApp with:

  • the date and time of your flight;
  • the number of people;
  • the address of your accommodation.

We reply with a price, and on the day, all you have to do is look for the sign.

Which option should you choose?

It all depends on how you travel:

  • You travel light and have time: the bus, via the Armenia terminal, is a good way to start your trip the Colombian way.
  • You arrive late or tired: a direct taxi or a transfer saves you the change.
  • There are several of you, with family or lots of luggage: the private transfer is often the most comfortable, and the price is shared between you.

Arriving by day or by night?

If you can choose your flight, aim to arrive during the day. The road to Salento is beautiful and you will see it in daylight: the hills, the coffee plantations, the first wax palms in the distance. You will also have more transport choices, and time to settle in calmly before dinner.

Arriving in the evening is still perfectly possible, but make life easy for yourself: book your transport in advance, keep the exact address of your accommodation to hand, and let them know your arrival time. In the villages, the streets start to look alike once night falls.

Travelling light in the Willys

If you plan to do some Willys tours during your stay, bear in mind that the jeep has its own character: space is tight, especially when the Willys is full. For your tour days, a small backpack is plenty. Leave the big suitcase at your accommodation: you will be more comfortable on the dirt tracks and enjoy the scenery more.

And once you are in Salento?

Salento makes an excellent base. The Cocora Valley is close by, and the mountain villages are within easy reach by Willys. If you want to see the wax palms the very next day, our Cocora + Salento tour leaves every day from Quimbaya or Filandia. To take in several villages in one day, have a look at Salento, Filandia and Cocora by Willys instead.

Staying in Armenia or Pereira rather than Salento? We can also pick you up there, as an option, for the start of a tour. And if your flight lands in Pereira instead, read our guide from Pereira airport to Salento and Filandia.

Our final tips for arriving

  • Download an offline map of the region before you leave: the signal can be weak on some mountain bends.
  • Keep a light jacket handy: Salento is higher than Armenia and it is often cooler there, especially in the evening.
  • Let your accommodation know your arrival time, especially if you land late.

And if you have the slightest doubt about your journey, message us: we will tell you honestly which option we would choose in your place.
