Many trips around Colombia go through Medellín before heading south to the coffee region. You can make the journey by bus, by plane or with a driver, and each option has its advantages. Here are the travel times, the prices we checked in 2026 and our tips for arriving in the Quindío feeling fresh.

Medellín and the coffee region: a natural pairing

Medellín and the coffee region fit together very well in one trip: the big city on one side, and on the other the hills of coffee bushes, the colourful villages and the wax palms. Between the two lie about 250 km of mountain road, or about 6 hours by car.

There are three usual ways to make the journey:

  • the bus, from Medellín’s Terminal del Sur;
  • the plane, to Pereira or Armenia;
  • a private driver, who takes you door to door.

Whichever you choose, you will arrive in one of the two gateway cities to the Quindío: Pereira, to the north, or Armenia, in the centre. From there, there is one last stretch of road to Salento, Filandia or Quimbaya. Here is how to choose.

By bus from the Terminal del Sur

The bus is the cheapest and most flexible option. Buses to the coffee region leave from Medellín’s Terminal del Sur, with several companies including Flota Occidental, Arauca and Bolivariano.

Key figures (2026 prices checked in October 2026):

  • Medellín to Pereira: about 4 h 30 to 5 h, for about 40,000 to 80,000 COP depending on the company and type of bus.
  • Medellín to Armenia: about 6 h to 6 h 40, for about 80,000 to 90,000 COP.

Fares and timetables vary by company, day and season: check them directly with the bus companies or at the terminal before you travel.

Once in Pereira or Armenia, you take a local bus from the city’s terminal. From Pereira, buses run to Filandia and to Salento; from Armenia, buses leave for Salento very frequently. We give the timetables and fares for these routes in our two guides: from Pereira airport to Salento and Filandia and from Armenia airport to Salento. The buses there leave from the terminals of those two cities, whether you arrive by plane or by bus from Medellín.

Our advice: set off in the morning. With the change of bus, the journey easily fills the day, and it is better to reach your village before dark.

By plane to Pereira or Armenia

Flying saves a lot of time on the road. When we checked, there were several direct routes:

  • Medellín (MDE) to Pereira: with Avianca and LATAM, about 1 hour in the air.
  • Medellín Olaya Herrera (EOH) to Pereira: with Clic, about 45 minutes in the air.
  • Medellín (MDE) to Armenia: with Avianca, one flight a day when we last checked.

Two words of caution. First, frequencies change often: check flights directly with the airlines when you book. Second, Pereira’s Matecaña airport is still running at reduced capacity since the earthquake of 10 August 2026: it reopened in late August 2026, with fewer flights than before. Armenia’s El Edén airport kept operating normally.

Once you land, the rest is simple: a taxi, a bus via the city terminal or a private transfer. It is all explained in our guides to Pereira airport and Armenia airport. If you would rather be met, we can pick you up with a Tinto Tours sign and a welcome tinto, priced on request: see our airport transfer.

With a private driver

A private driver takes you from your accommodation in Medellín to your accommodation in the coffee region, with no changes. It is the most comfortable option with children, lots of luggage or a small group, and you can stop along the way whenever you like.

Just bear in mind that it is a long day on the road: about 6 hours of driving, not counting stops. This kind of service is booked on a quote basis, and the price depends on the vehicle, the number of people and the drop-off address. Ask for a firm price before you commit.

Pereira or Armenia: where should you arrive?

Which city to arrive in depends mostly on where you are staying. Here are the approximate driving distances from each city:

  • From Pereira: Filandia about 31 km (about 45 minutes), Salento about 37 km (about 55 minutes), Quimbaya about 35 km (about 45 minutes to 1 hour).
  • From Armenia: Salento about 26 km (about 40 minutes), Filandia about 30 km (about 45 minutes), Quimbaya about 22 km (about 40 minutes).

In short: if you are staying in Filandia, Pereira is a good gateway, and the bus from Medellín gets there faster. If you are staying in Salento or Quimbaya, Armenia is a little closer, but the bus from Medellín takes longer to get there. For a stay in Salento, both work: choose whichever times suit you best.

To help you pick your village, our pages on Salento and Filandia describe the feel of each one.

The roads since the earthquake

Since the earthquake of 10 August 2026, the Autopistas del Café are open between Armenia, Pereira and Chinchiná, with single-lane sections for roadworks. Allow some extra time for the journey, and check road conditions before you leave on the Autopistas del Café website.

Our comparison at a glance

  • Tight budget, travelling light: the bus from the Terminal del Sur, then a local bus.
  • Short on time: a flight to Pereira or Armenia, then a taxi or a transfer.
  • Family, group, luggage: a private driver, or a flight with a transfer waiting for you on arrival.

Your first day in the Quindío

After a day on the road or in the air, your first evening is mainly for settling in. The next day, the region is yours. For a good overview, our Salento, Filandia and Cocora by Willys tour takes in the wax palm valley and both villages in a single outing, leaving from Quimbaya or Filandia.

If you are travelling as a family or a small group, the Private Willys for the day lets you design your own route: 8 hours with your willysero, up to 8 people, for 650,000 COP per Willys. And if you are staying in Pereira or Armenia, we can pick you up as an option for the start of a tour, for 150,000 COP per group.
