It is one of the questions we hear most: how many days should you plan for the coffee region? There is no single answer, but there are good benchmarks. Here is how we help you decide, depending on your pace, what you want to see and the real distances between the villages.

What exactly is the coffee region?

People talk about “the coffee region” or the Eje Cafetero to mean the departments of Quindío, Risaralda and Caldas. It is a land of mountains, coffee farms, colourful villages and wax palm forests.

Quindío is its most compact heart: this is where you find the Cocora Valley, Salento, Filandia and many small villages in the mountains. It is also where we live and where our tours leave from, every day, in Quimbaya or Filandia.

Short distances, but mountain roads

On the map, everything looks close. On the road, bends and climbs make journeys a little longer. Here are approximate driving times to give you an idea:

  • From Armenia: Salento about 26 km away (about 40 min), Filandia about 30 km (about 45 min), Quimbaya about 22 km (about 40 min), Montenegro about 12 km (about 20 min).
  • From Pereira: Filandia about 31 km away (about 45 min), Salento about 37 km (about 55 min), Quimbaya about 35 km (45 min to 1 hour).
  • Salento to the Cocora Valley: about 12 km, 20 to 30 min by Willys from the main square.
  • The mountain villages: from Armenia, Córdoba is about 40 min away, Buenavista about 45 min and Pijao about 50 min.
  • From Medellín: about 250 km and around 6 hours on the road. If you come from there, allow an extra half day of travel.

These figures show one thing: you can stay in one place and explore the others from there. What takes time is not the driving, it is the days themselves, which deserve to be lived without rushing.

Two days: the essentials, in a bit of a hurry

With two days, you can see the great classics:

  • Day 1: the Cocora Valley and Salento, for the wax palms and the colourful balconies.
  • Day 2: Filandia and a coffee farm, for the village and the tinto.

It works, but you will miss what makes the region special: the slow pace, the lesser known villages, the evenings on a village square. Two days are a good option if you are crossing Colombia and Quindío is just one stop.

Three days: the right balance

Three days is our recommendation for a first visit. You see the essentials without rushing, and you keep time to slow down.

  • Day 1: Cocora + Salento, for the wax palm valley and the streets of Salento.
  • Day 2: a coffee day on a farm, with a tinto and the harvest.
  • Day 3: Filandia, its colourful streets and its basketry, or a tour of the villages.

We have written a full article on this plan: Quindío in 3 days.

Five days: off the beaten track

With five days, you start to discover the Quindío that few visitors see:

  • La Carbonera, a vast wax palm forest far from the crowds, on a full day from 7 am to 4 pm;
  • the Mountain Villages Route, with Córdoba, Pijao and Buenavista;
  • a family day or a theme park if you are travelling with children;
  • a free half day to wander around a village square.

It is the ideal pace for those who like to take their time and meet local people.

A week or more: living at Quindío’s pace

With a week, you can alternate big days and quiet days, change villages, go back to a place you loved. It is also a chance to go further: the Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs, Ukumarí park in Pereira or the Botanical Garden in Calarcá, which we also reach by Willys. All the details are on our parks by Willys page.

Where to stay during your trip?

The length of your stay can also guide where you sleep:

  • For two or three days, one base is enough. Salento is handy for Cocora, Filandia for peace and sunsets.
  • For five days or more, you can switch villages halfway: a few nights in Salento, then a few nights in Filandia or in Quimbaya, closer to the big parks.

Our tours leave from Quimbaya or Filandia, and we offer an optional pick-up in Armenia or Pereira for the start of a tour. So you can stay wherever you like. To compare the two most popular villages, read Salento or Filandia: where to stay.

What about the weather?

In the coffee region, it can rain at any time of year, but showers often pass quickly. Always pack a light rain jacket and keep some flexibility in your plans: with one or two extra days, you can move an outing if the sky is too heavy. That is one more reason not to plan too short. We explain the seasons in When to visit the coffee region.

How to choose the length of your stay

Ask yourself three questions:

  • What draws you most? Landscapes, coffee, villages, animals? The more varied your interests, the more days you need.
  • What is your pace? If you like walking and packing things in, three days may be enough. If you prefer to wander, plan five.
  • Are you travelling with children? Add one day: with them, a quiet day between two big outings changes everything.

The pace that works best

Whatever the length, one principle guides us: one big outing a day, no more. A day by Willys starts early, with a tinto on the square, and ends in the late afternoon. In the evening, enjoy the village: a square, a coffee, a simple dinner. That is often when you really feel the soul of Quindío.

Plan your stay with us

We have a tool to plan your stay: you choose the number of days and who you are travelling with, and we suggest tours day by day. Plan my stay

Booking several tours together also costs less: 10% off from 2 tours, 15% from 3 and 20% from 4, on the price of the tours excluding options.

Our advice

If you are unsure, go for three days and keep one spare day: in Quindío, a free day always finds a use, between a village square, a coffee farm and a sunset over the mountains.

How long does it take from Armenia to Salento?

About 40 minutes by car for about 26 km. From Pereira, allow about 55 minutes for about 37 km.

Can I book several tours in a row?

Yes, and it costs less: 10% off from 2 tours booked together, 15% from 3 and 20% from 4, on the price of the tours excluding options.
